Keyboard shortcuts!

·1 min read

Our power users at Standard Metrics use shortcuts like Cmd+k for search and Cmd+i for our AI Analyst. I also use Cmd+\ to toggle open the nav drawer in Notion. I thought it would be cool to bring similar functionality to my website too.

Adding a keyboard shortcut for the browser nav took less than a minute in Claude Code. The harder part was building a search experience that 1) felt graceful from a UX perspective on desktop and mobile, and 2) indexed the important information across different parts of my site. This took a bunch of iteration and switching to Opus to deal with some bugs that came up, particularly in the mobile browser. I'm learning over time that mobile web is almost always the most challenging format to get just right.

After all is said done, I'm really pleased with how this turned out. I don't expect that most of my visitors will think to use Cmd+k and Cmd+\, but hopefully the ones that do will be delighted with their experience.
